Canton's Holiday Season Runs on Weeknights This Year. Here Are the Dates That Count.

The City of Canton has scheduled six holiday events at Cannon Park this year. Five of them are evening events on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Only the Merry Market and Christmas Parade on Dec. 12 land on a Saturday, while The Mill on Etowah has the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving to itself. If your idea of a Canton Christmas outing is a weekend afternoon downtown, this year's calendar points you to after-work evenings on East Main Street.

All six city events are based at Cannon Park, 130 East Main Street. Here is the full downtown schedule as the city lists it.

Six Events at Cannon Park, Five of Them Midweek Evenings

Date Day Event Hours
Nov. 18 Wednesday Holiday Tree Lighting and Drone Show 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Dec. 3 Thursday Mistletoe on Main, live reindeer 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Dec. 10 Thursday Mistletoe on Main, special holiday activity 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Dec. 11 Friday Christmas in Canton 6 to 10 p.m.
Dec. 12 Saturday 39th Annual Merry Market, then Christmas Parade Noon to 6 p.m., parade at 6 p.m.
Dec. 17 Thursday Mistletoe on Main, Christmas Pete 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Most of these start between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. That lines up with the end of a workday. It also means the weekdays matter more than usual. Some holiday guides still show Nov. 19 for the tree lighting and Dec. 13 for the Merry Market. This year, Dec. 13 is a Sunday. The city's own event pages put the tree lighting on Wednesday, Nov. 18 and the market and parade on Saturday, Dec. 12.

Wednesday, Nov. 18: The Season Starts With a Drone Show Over Main Street

The city's tree lighting comes first, on a Wednesday evening. After the Cannon Park tree is lit, a holiday drone show flies over Main Street. The city's tree lighting event page calls the drone display one that "has quickly become a favorite part of our holiday celebration."

The Knox STEM Academy Chorus and Avery Elementary Chorus are on the program, and Tate Fireplaces is listed among the 2026 sponsors. The event runs two hours, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. You can head downtown after work, catch the lighting and the drones, and still be home at a normal hour on a school night.

The tree lighting sets the pattern for the rest of the season downtown: short, evening-length events built around Cannon Park and the storefronts facing it.

The Mill on Etowah Takes the Thanksgiving Weekend

The city skips the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, and The Mill on Etowah fills them. Its 6th annual Christmas at The Mill festival runs Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The Mill lists ice skating, more than 85 vendor booths, football on a big screen, holiday treats and photos with Santa. Explore Canton calls the outdoor rink Rink on the River.

The Mill holds its own tree lighting on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m., ten days after the city's. Joe Gransden performs, Canton City Lifestyle's Chicka Elloy hosts, and Santa joins for the lighting.

Vendors on The Mill's 2026 lineup include Canton Cigar Bar, Confessions Coffee, District on Etowah, Rock n Roll Sushi, Honey Hollow Boutique, Damsel Romantic Bookstore, Baked by Bri and Beagle Creek Headwear.

The two venues end up working as a pair. The Mill runs full days on a holiday weekend. Downtown Canton runs a string of shorter evenings in the weeks after. They don't compete for the same days, so you can go to both tree lightings without missing anything.

Three Thursdays Built Around a Free Wagon Ride

Mistletoe on Main is the part of the calendar that leans hardest on weeknights. On three Thursday evenings, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, the city offers free wagon rides through Downtown Canton from 5:30 to 8 p.m. After the ride, Santa is at the gazebo in Cannon Park.

Each Thursday adds something different:

  • Dec. 3: live reindeer
  • Dec. 10: what the city calls a "special holiday activity"
  • Dec. 17: Christmas Pete, decked out in Christmas lights

The city clearly means these evenings to include downtown businesses. Its Mistletoe on Main event page says:

Come early, shop our wonderful downtown businesses, and enjoy dinner at one of our amazing local restaurants. Make an evening of it, slow down, soak up the Christmas spirit.

That makes a Thursday downtown an easy dinner plan. The city's downtown merchant directory lists B. Loved at 191 East Main Street, a short walk from the park, and Goin' Coastal Seafood at 125 West Main Street. The wagon rides start at 5:30 p.m. You can take the ride while it's still early and the children have energy, then sit down to eat on Main Street before 8.

There are three Thursdays, so you have options. If Dec. 3 brings rain or a late meeting, two more dates follow, each with the same wagon rides and Santa at the gazebo.

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11 and 12: Downtown's Only Back-to-Back Days

After weeks of single evenings, downtown hosts two days in a row in mid-December.

Christmas in Canton fills Cannon Park on Friday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 10 p.m. It is the longest of the city's evening events. The city's list of activities includes:

  • Santa
  • A petting zoo
  • Face painting and a balloon artist
  • Wagon rides
  • A s'mores station
  • Inflatables
  • Cookie decorating and make-and-take crafts
  • Wreath-making
  • Christmas Pete

The city says shops will stay open late and restaurants will be ready for visitors. With a 10 p.m. finish, this is the one Friday evening with enough time for both the activities and holiday shopping.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, the 39th Annual Downtown Canton Merry Market runs from noon to 6 p.m. in Cannon Park, with small-business vendors, the downtown shops, Santa and food. When the market closes, the Canton Christmas Parade starts at 6 p.m. Tate Fireplaces, Cheshire Heating & Air and Outback Deck are the listed Merry Market sponsors.

Saturday is the only daytime event on the city's downtown calendar. It also runs straight into the parade: shop from noon, then stay where you are for the 6 p.m. start. Friday night and the Saturday market add up to 10 scheduled hours before the parade even starts, more than the other four evenings combined.

The weekend sits within a busy stretch of parades around Cherokee County. The Cherokee Office of Economic Development's holiday guide lists Ball Ground's March of the Toys Parade on Dec. 4, Woodstock's Christmas Jubilee and Parade of Lights on Dec. 6, and the Holly Jolly Christmas Parade in Holly Springs on Dec. 12. If you have a Holly Springs parade on your list as well, note that it lands on the same Saturday as Canton's.

How the Weeks Lay Out

Taken together, the season runs from mid-November to just before Christmas, week by week:

  1. Week of Nov. 16: City tree lighting and drone show, Wednesday evening
  2. Thanksgiving weekend: Christmas at The Mill, Friday and Saturday, with The Mill's tree lighting Saturday at 6 p.m.
  3. Week of Nov. 30: Mistletoe on Main and live reindeer, Thursday evening
  4. Week of Dec. 7: Mistletoe on Main Thursday, Christmas in Canton Friday, then Merry Market and the parade Saturday
  5. Week of Dec. 14: Mistletoe on Main with Christmas Pete, Thursday evening

The week of Dec. 7 is the busiest, with three events on three days in a row. The other weeks each have a single evening, and every one of those falls on a weeknight.
